Background: It's Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY. The Wonderwheel is a great and somewhat scary ride for those who haven't been on it. Until now, Erin had never ridden it. Hilarious.
Check out this video of us being...us! This is Washington Square Park in Lower Manhattan. It was cold and a great relief after a hot day. Note: Erin is already soaking wet before she ever put on the poncho :-)
Morning sure does come early on mission trips. While it hasn't been too bad the past couple nights, there was already a bit of weariness on some faces. Spending most of the day in the Sun yesterday definitely took it out of us.
Today had just as many amazing moments for us as Monday did. We packed our lunches and headed toward the Subway. We learned on the way that the NYC Relief Bus would be meeting us in Harlem one block from where we stood the day before in prayer stations. Again our location took us out of our comfort zone. Just a stones throw from a hotel that is pay-per-hour, and a corner frequented by prostitutes and drug trade, we set up shop to feed the poor and hungry.
After being briefed on the whats and what nots to do today, our crew jumped to work getting stuff ready for the people who were already lining up. Cody, Rebecca, and YWAM leader Alex Miller took one of the prayer station stands and headed back over to 125th St to pray with people again.
Both areas again were flooded with people in desperate need of physical help but in greater need of spiritual fulfillment. Throughout the morning and early afternoon, the team bonded together, fed, and prayed with so many people. As the need at the Relief Bus began to fade, team members joined the Prayer Station until the end.
As we closed up, we were met by a man named Luis. Luis said he had come from the streets of New York and moved to Miami where he preached the Word of God to others. When he returned to New York, he moved into a lifestyle that did not acknowledge God. He said he was ashamed to share what he had done since returning to NYC. He asked if our whole team would pray for him. We did, and then we encouraged him to go to a partner church 5 blocks away where the Men's Pastor would be waiting to help him further. We saw him walk 2.5 blocks before we could not see anymore. We'll wait to hear if he made it. Please pray for Luis!
Later that afternoon, after a long ride from Harlem to Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, we joined the team that works at the Russian Jewish Community Center. Brighton Beach is almost exclusively a Russian speaking neighborhood. Signs, and information are almost all in Russian. It is amazing. The center offers English classes where anyone can come and learn a new language and also be taught the Bible. They have seen hundreds of Russian immigrants come to Christ through their programs. We were able to distribute flyers (in Russian) to the local community. By the time we left, they already had their first response! 2 of our guys also worked inside doing repair work for the center.
The day ended for us with dinner at Nathan's World Famous Hot Dogs on Coney Island. Everyone rode the Wonder Wheel, explored a little and then it was back to the East Village for Starbucks and then BED!
We exited the station at 125th and Lexington today not sure what to expect of Prayer Stations today. We realized very quickly that we were worlds away from Huffman Mill Rd. and Church St. Briefings that we may see things way out of our norm were certainly realized. We stayed aware of our surroundings but soon an overwhelming burden for the people of the city spread through the group.
Each person played a critical role today. Person after person came asking for prayer. Situations varied from broken marriage, drug addictions, anger, and so much more. The spiritual vacuum in the lives we encountered was overwhelming. Many people thanked us for praying for the city and for the people of Harlem. The stories of each person we met could fill many pages and likely will very soon. Just know that God moved through the youth of FSM into the lives of so many in Harlem today.
The evening was spent prayer walking near City Hall, Ground Zero, Wall St, and NYU. It was such a beautiful way to spend the day with these students. We did have our share of fun including several people deciding to become part of the fountain in Washington Sq Park. We'll add the story of the $5 challenge later as well. Let's just say that even our times of fun and relaxation were built around ministry!
What an unbelievable morning for us. After a long day of travel we were excited to wake up and see New York. Even greater was the opportunity to worship the Lord at the Brooklyn Tabernacle. We went to the noon service. What an awesome sight to see people lined up outside and around the block to get in. 2.5 hours of amazing music, worship, and teaching.
Then of COURSE it was off to Junior's restaurant for Cheesecake.
Original plans had us doing a prayer walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. However the rain prevented us from doing so. Instead the YWAM team mobilized us for prayer stations in... Grand Central station. So here it is... basically we have red aprons on that say "Prayer Changes Things." We have a table with a large banner that says "Prayer Station." Two or three walk up one way and two or three the other way with flyers saying "Prayer station ahead." At the table are several of us with Bibles, encouraging prayer books and more. We walk up to people and ask if we could pray for them... and oh did we.
Cody was able to spend 2 hours with a shop attendant named Rahman discussing the difference between the Islamic faith and faith in Christ. He had 1000 questions and at the end asked for the Gospel of John. Erin had so many opportunities to share her heart and pray with people. Rebecca, Jenny, Chris, Sarah...everyone had the opportunity to greet people, pray with them, and of course be rejected by many more. Awesome.
Afterward we headed to ESPN Zone and Times Square for a bit before heading back to debrief. What began as a day of introduction to NYC turned out to be a day of all out ministry.
Our journey to New York was one that was relatively event free (meaning nothing went wrong). It was fun to talk with others about our mission. Most of the students spent time in the cafe car playing games and talking about life. We dropped Alison off in Wilmington, DE and made it to NYC by 9:15. Not bad for a train scheduled to arrive at 9:02.
Alex Miller was waiting for us in Penn Station along with Jenny Kemp who had arrived at 8:47pm. We made our way outside with all of the luggage and took 3 taxi's to the place we are staying. (Click here to see!)
It was hard to see much when we arrived but it was definitely good to be here and we were no doubt in the city. Our building is an old but very normal building in the heart of the East Village. It is a very Eastern European neighborhood.
Mission:NY06 - Would this picture make any more sense if we told you he was waiting for a soccer ball to be kicked at him. Guess you had to be there ;-)

*Rebecca was part of the group as she, Ben, Dylan, and Timmy, joined us on their way back from Senior Week @ Myrtle Beach. South of the Border Trip is and always will be a guys only trip!

Hey There! I (Moose) just got off the phone with Brenda from Loaves and Fishes. She would like our group to help with the Postal Carrier Drop-off tomorrow afternoon. That means that instead of arriving at 9am, we will begin work @ 2pm. It also means that we get to be there for the cook-out following the work. All in all, we should be there until around 6:30pm. Below are the details I sent out with the email regarding this today.
What:Help receive donations from Postal Carrier routes. We need as many hands as possible PLUS there will be food afterward :-)
When:Tomorrow (5/9/09) from 2:00pm - 6:30pm and remember dinner will be served.
Where:Loaves and Fishes in Downtown Burlington. 509 S Lexington (on the corner of Maple Ave).
Why: Frontline has partnered with Loaves and Fishes for almost 4 years. Many of you have yet to join us on our mission field. We invite parents and students to give of their time to serve the needy of this community. REMEMBER: Loaves and Fishes will NOT take place at the usual time of 9am this weekend. Please arrive by 2pm.
